Ingredients you need:

You can find the exact amount in the recipe card below. I just want to quickly explain to you what each ingredient is used for in this recipe.

  • In vegan butter or oil roasted onions for the flavor and a chunky sauce (if you prefer not to blend it before serving)
  • Coconut sugar (or any other sugar) to caramelize the onions
  • Flour to thicken the sauce
  • Tomato purée and balsamic vinegar for the beautiful brown color
  • Red wine, to make this sauce like a pro → You can substitute the red wine with white wine, it’s delicious either way. I always use the wine I have at home (e.g. leftovers from vegan bolognese sauce).
  • Vegan Worcestershire Sauce and pepper to season the gravy! Can be substituted with soy sauce.
  • Optional: If you want to give your gravy a sweet touch, add one tablespoon of jam.

How to make it:

  • Heat a saucepan with vegan butter or oil. Add the minced onion and roast for a few minutes until translucent.

  • Heat a saucepan with vegan butter or oil. Add the minced onion and saute for ∼3 minutes until translucent. Add the sugar and caramelize the onions for a ∼2 minutes

  • Stir in the tomato purée and flour.

  • Add the balsamic vinegar, wine, and water. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes at medium heat until the gravy has thickened. Add more water if the sauce gets too thick

  • Season it withvegan Worcestershire sauce(or soy sauce) and pepper.

  • Blend it until smooth in your food processor,blender, orimmersion blender.

  • Serve it warm in agravy boat.

  • Dou you like your vegan gravy chunky?Serve it without blending.

Notes

  • You can store the sauce up to a few days in your fridge. If you preheat it again, add some water as the sauce starts to thicken in the fridge.
  • Add one tablespoon of jam if you want to give your gravy a sweet touch.
  • I like to add two tablespoons of vinegar, but it gives the sauce a hint sour taste which not everybody likes!
