Valerie,

I have an O-300 in my '58 C172. I'll bet your oilleakage is coming from the pushrod tubes where they fit the cylinder head. Theyare "bead" swaged into grooves in the the head and over time loosen up. I knowmine is sure leaking from there. Aircraft Tool Supply sells a tool to re-swagethose if you or your A+P that does the engine work doesn't haveone.

I just got one and made a deal with the FBO - hehelps me get this done, I give him the tool.

If I ever get my Tailwind flying (has an O-320)I'll be selling the Cessna andI won't be needing it.

If your Continental is leaking there, this is afairly easy fix - you don't have to remove the cylinders - just therockercovers and rocker shafts. Yeah, I know it's $100 but the alternative (replacingthe tubes with better sealing ones) is 15 times more expensive. One other leakspottocheck aretherocker cover gaskets. The hi-tempsilicone gaskets work a lot better than the old stock ones.

Right now I'm wrestling with a static system leakon my TW to be fixedbefore getting the FAA a/w inspection! Some bozo (me)forgot to put in those little inserts in theplastic tube ends beforeassembling - and as a result had leaks. (wouldn't hold a vacuum) Might have topull off the wing to fix this - argh! One thing after another keeps popping up preventing me from flying!

Here are the numbers from the logbook

refilled with 7qts shell 40wt, cleaned filter screen, #1 56/80, #2 70/80 #3 73/80 #4 58/80 #5 60/80 #6 62/80, Mary C helped

1158 smoh however TOH was done by previous owner about 500 hours ago - new pistons, rings, valve job, new springs. low compression is due to ring blow by - don't detect any valve problems. previous owner says he never got it to break in properly.

The engine was last overhauled in 1976 so the cases haven't been opened since I was in grade school. It is starting to make me a little nervous even though the engine continues to run great and will turn 2850 rpm wot. all the accessories are in great shape and are either new or overhauled recently. Other than the low compression the thing that bugs me most is that it leaks oil like a sieve 1/2 qt/hr.

Hooked! Now I'm double hooked. I'm always on a budget - don't think our TW will ever be as nice or fast as a Jim C or Jim R plane, but after talking to everybody I'm going to try to get a few things fixed before coming back next year.

- it would be cool to put the W10 type wingtips, Ralph (previous owner) thinks that would be more work than building new wings but I don't see how that could be.

- the venturi's will be tossed in the trash can.

- engine overhauled

- more drag reduction

- paint and cleanup

A whole year before coming back ... it's too long. BTW it is 98 degrees here in Houston.yuck.

What do you have planned there Val?? 0-360?? Are you hooked now after that ride with Jim R?? Or are you gonna just do some more streamlining?

we went through leaking pitot and made a neat little access panel in the bottom of the wing. it is held in place with a tab and one screw. the edges are covered with white electrical tape which becomes invisible on the white wing. thanks for the tool tip.
