Ingredients For The Best DIY Soap For Kids

One of the best things about this easy soap making for kids is that you actually only need a few things and it’s very quick and easy to make. In fact, you have to be quick as the soap sets fast!

eBay and Amazon Australia are quick and easy places to buy ingredients and all the gear you need. Below, I direct you to the best place to buy each ingredient or you can click here to buy now on Amazon or here for eBay. This is how I buy all of these ingredients.

Clear Glycerine Melt And Pour Soap Base

Clear glycerine melt and pour soap base is the perfect choice in any recipe where you want to showcase objects in your soaps like flower petals, herbs or in this case – toys! This base is also a good choice when you are creating recipes with bright colours.

This type of melt and pour soap base can be less moisturising for some skin types and so it is not always recommended for individuals with dry skin.

Some of these clear melt and pour bases can be more of a yellowish shade which can somewhat impact colouring and visibility of objects.

Glycerine clear soap base is easy to melt, easily coloured and easily moulded into all kinds of different shapes. This kind of soap requires less essential oil or fragrances than other types of soap bases and so it is a good choice for kids.

Tiny Plastic Toys

This is the fun ingredient! You can really pick any toy you want except it has to be small as it has to fit inside the soap.

I like using small monster sucker toys. They look cool in the soap and after they are free of the soap, they stick to the side of the bath which makes them fun.

Note that this are quite small and I wouldn’t recommend them for younger kids who could put them in their mouth.

Lavender Essential Oil

My kids like the smell of lavender essential oil. However, you can choose to use whichever essential oil your child enjoys. There are a heap of benefits associated with using lavender oil though, like decreasing anxiety, stress, sadness, muscle aches and more. It contains antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and more and so it is a great choice for use on the skin.

Not all essential oils are recommended for children but I have listed a few you can choose from below.

Note: Peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under the age of 30 months old.

Soap Mould

You can really use any soap or silicone mould to make these soaps whatever shape you want.

I use smaller square ones because I find this works best to be both a good size that my 5 year old can handle in his hand and to cover the toy enough. You also don’t want it too big as it’ll take too long for the toy to get free which isn’t as much fun 🙂

How To Make Soap For Kids

Below, I share with you my DIY soap recipe for kids. It is a straightforward recipe. However, I do have a few suggestions to add.

First, I recommend you have all of your ingredients and equipment ready to go to ensure it is a smooth process. You’ll then want to get your glycerine and chop it into smaller chunks ready for melting (chopping it smaller makes it easier to melt). You can see in the photo above how I do it.

Then, place your glycerine soap base chunks into a microwave safe bowl and begin to melt it in the microwave at 30 second intervals to check its progress and to mix it until it has all melted.

Once melted and cooled slightly, you can add your essential oil of choice and then mix it until it is fully combined.

Pour only a small amount of your soap mixture into your soup moulds – just enough to cover the bottom of your moulds. Once it has cooled just a little a bit, very carefully place your toy on top and pour the rest of your soap mixture over the top of it. It is important to work quickly during this process as this soap does set quickly.

If you find your soap has set too quickly before adding your toy, you can easily melt it again. It can take a little bit of practice to insert the toy.

Leave your soap to cool completely until it has fully set and then you can remove your soap from its mould. It is ready to use.

Super Fun Kids Soap Recipe

Yield:6

Prep Time:5 minutes

Cook Time:2 minutes

Total Time:7 minutes

This is super easy soap making for kids. Simply take some melt and pour soap, add their favourite essential oil and make it fun by adding a toy to the middle

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Get everything out, all set to go
  2. Chop your glycerine soap base into smaller pieces to make it easier to melt and place in a microwave safe bowl
  3. Melt in the microwave, checking and mixing every 30 seconds until it is all melted
  4. Add the lavender essential oil and mix until fully combined
  5. Pour a small amount into the soap moulds to just cover the bottom
  6. Let it cool a little
  7. Carefully add the toy
  8. Pour the remaining soap over the top
  9. Let it cool completely until fully set
  10. Remove soap from mould and enjoy!

Notes

It's tricky to let the soap harden just a little before adding the toy but not too much. You also have to be careful of air bubbles. It gets easier with practise.

To make six soaps for this recipe, you'll want a smaller soap mould. I find smaller soaps work better for smaller hands and it also means they get to the toy quicker which makes my kids more keen to use the soap.

How To Use Your New Fun Soap

Using your DIY soap is easy and your kids will have fun using their new soap and discovering their toy.

Simply use your soap in the bath or shower and let your kids enjoy the aromatic effects of the essential oils.

Depending on how far you have placed your toy inside your kids soap will depend on how many washes it will take to retrieve.
